Dental Bonding

What Is Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding or resin bonding is when a tooth coloured resin is bonded to your tooth and sculpted into proper shape. The resin is a composite of semi-liquid acrylic and tiny particles of glass. The composite resin forms a durable, stain-resistant surface that can be polished to mimic the texture of your natural teeth.

Bonding addresses many of the same issues traditionally treated with a crown. Some patients find that their bonded teeth can last for a number of years.

How The Procedure Works

The bonding process begins by etching the tooth’s surface with a mild acidic solution, making the tooth more porous and receptive to the plastic bonding material. Next, the soft, pliable resin is spread over the tooth in layers. A bright beam of light locks the resin onto the tooth surface. Each layer hardens in minutes. After the last coat has been applied and hardened, the bonded material is shaped and polished. Your dentist will choose a shade of resin that matches your natural teeth.

Could I Benefit From Cosmetic Bonding?

Bonding is not always the best choice for teeth in need of restoration, depending on the type and extent of the problem. However, bonding may be an effective solution for teeth that are:

  • Broken or chipped

  • Discoloured or stained

  • Malformed or crooked

  • Worn or abraded

  • Cracked or pitted

  • Widely spaced or uneven

Things To Keep In Mind

  1. Upkeep required: Bonded teeth need upkeep from time to time, including smoothing to remove stains and addition of small pieces of the bonded plastic that have chipped away from the tooth.

  2. Eventual replacement: The acrylic materials used in bonding do not last as long as a typical crown and may need to be replaced within five years.

  3. Possible discoloration: Bonded teeth are more susceptible to stains than your natural teeth. Smoking cigarettes, drinking tea or coffee, and even eating blueberries may cause some discoloration.

  4. Potential risks: Gum irritation and occasional dental decay around the bonding materials on the tooth can occur in some patients
